Gold Medal for Tech

By: Sydney Watson, Business Administration Student at University of Michigan

Four years ago, the London Olympics became to most watched TV event in history with 217 million viewers in the US alone. The number of viewers is only expected to go up for this year’s Olympic Games, making it one of the best times to showcase new technology.

VISA

VISA

For this year’s Olympics, Visa is sponsoring the payment systems throughout. Visa and Bradesco (a Brazilian bank) created wearable bracelets for quick and efficient payment. With tons of athletes, journalists, news reporters, workers, and viewers all throughout the event, this rubber, waterproof bracelet makes paying for Olympic goods simple. On top of this, the athletes that Visa sponsors will be wearing rings with microchips inside that allow them to pay for their goods with a simple tap at any of the terminals. Through this, the athletes can create talk about Visa’s new features, and Visa can test out a beta form of their potential future.

SAMSUNG

The Olympics offer a huge opening for Samsung as well. With their new Galaxy S7 Edge coming out this past March, they’ve given a special Olympics edition to over 12,000 Olympians.

One key feature comes with these phones; they all come with a flag app which athletes are encouraged to hold up. The national flag can be waved through a phone – emphasizing country pride and the technological advantages of having a Samsung phone.

PHOTO FINISH

One of the main innovations introduced for these Olympics is the photo finish technology. This new technology is made by Omega. It allows for catching the exact picture of the athlete as soon as the cross the line – giving viewers a snapshot of history.

LAP COUNTERS

Did you see those little squares down at the bottom of the pool when you were watching swimming? One of the newest Omega tech products that are in Rio 2016 are the underwater monitors for swimmers. These monitors served as backups to the traditional hand-operated lap counters. Some athletes prefer the underwater monitors because it allows them to keep their head underwater and not look up to see which lap they are on with the hand-operated lap counters.

TECH MEETS OLYMPICS

After all of these tech advancements being used in the Olympics, this fall there will be a new way of this happening. Tech will meet the Olympics fully in the first cyborg Olympics this October taking place in Zurich. Researchers, scientists, and engineers from all over the world will showcase their technology they’ve created to help disabled lives easier.
